I ran into a problem when trying to get my Vista PC to network with my windows XP laptop. I could see the laptop and access the shared folders from my VISTA machine, but I couldn't the XP machine to access the shared folders on my VISTA machine. I searched and search the web and here are a few good links and the solution that worked for me:

Solution: (at least for me)
1. Try the easy fixes first that don't seem too complex (ie. make sure the workgroups are named the same, the folders are shared and the passwords are the same)
2. I tried the winsock xp fix and it didn't work... and I tried the registry suggestion from the last link above and that didn't work either.
3. I'm not sure if the TCP/IP change helped, but it wasn't the fix
4. The fix was in how I shared the folders on the VISTA machine. You can highlight a folder, right-click on it and then select share. The trick is to select the "guest" option from the drop down box. Then click add and change the ownership to co-owner. Now click share... wait and click done.
5. Go back to the XP machine and find the shared folder. now you can view it's contents.
